Our aims...
Phonics and early reading
Mastering reading at an early age is absolutely paramount to lifelong learning.
Here at Lowdham, we ensure that children have a sound grasp of phonics so they can decode words and then use specific skills in order to retrieve, infer, predict and comprehend when reading a range of texts.
For the teaching of phonics, we use Bug Club - this scheme drives the sequence of learning.
Children are carefully assessed, monitored and tracked; they are given books that match their phonics level.
The children take home three types of book each week: a book matched to their phonics level; a more ambitious story book for sharing with new words to learn; and a borrow book (selected from our classroom libraries) to take home and look at with their family. The combination of these books ensures that they make good progress with their phonics skills whilst also fostering a love of reading and sharing books.

We love to give all the children here at Lowdham multiple opportunities to thrive in different areas; to see that learning can occur everywhere and in different ways.
