STEM Week

British Science Week-  8th - 17th March

British Science Week is a celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). At Lowdham Primary, the children have celebrated by taking part in different activities to develop their skills in these areas.

The first big challenge was to test the strength of paper! The children had to collaborate in teams to design and construct a structure that could hold one exercise book or more. The winning team was a group of Year 6 girls whose structure was able to hold thirteen exercise books by understanding that the paper would be strongest if it was rolled into tubes.

Other activities the children have been involved in were:

Moving sweets from the floor and onto a different table without touching them, buiding 3-d shapes from spaghetti and marshmallows and programming BeeBots. In this activity the children explored how to control the Beebots and move them from one place to another accurately. They investigated whether it could travel uphill or over bumpier terrain but found that it didn’t have enough force or power! Some of the children were very organised and wrote out their instructions first before programming the Beebot.

KS1 had great fun blowing bubbles from different shaped wands. Did you know triangle, square, star and heart shaped bubble wands all make sphere-shaped bubbles?

There was also a Lego story club. Children used story books as inspiration for building and creating models using Lego.

Lots of super engineering, team work and ingenuity took place at Lowdham this past week . We hope all the children have been inspired to get into STEM and try something new!
